The film, American Beauty acts a symbolic form is various ways. The main protagonist in the film is unhappy with his modern day, typical lifestyle. His family does not get along, he hates his job. and he feels as though he is going through the motions. One day he decides that he doesn't want to live this life anymore, he quits his job, separates from his wife and starts to do things that makes him happy. This is a very basic plot overview for those who have never seen the film.
The way in which this film acts as a symbolic form is through the protagonist's character. He stands for all the men and women in America who go through the daily motions of life, instead of doing things that make them happy. It is from my own perspective that an abundance of people from our country conduct their lives like so. What the movie wants his character to end the film with and the viewer who may identify with him is that your not stuck. You don't need a fancy job and family to compete with everyone else on the block and to be happy. That is what the media and the economy tells you so that you will continue to be the perfect consumer and citizen that they need. He is just one character in the film, but he stands symbolically for thousands of other people at the same time. He not only stands for them, but he attempts to symbolically teach them a lesson, through much metaphoric scripting and film editing.
