A New Symbolic Form

While we can say that George Washington was a symbolic form to the world in the late 1700s in America, that has drastically changed now. Products that give shape to the way we see the world have completely changed more than anyone could have dreamed back then. That is why I am going to pick a car as my new symbolic form example.

If you think about it, we use cars to travel pretty much everywhere. In fact, up until this semester, I did not have a car and I thought I was going to get abducted every time I walked anywhere, especially when I moved off campus and had to walk here every day. Now that I have a car, though, I use it to get everywhere. I technically could walk to Wegmans or campus, but it is so much easier to hop in my car and drive there. In addition, having a car is kind of like a different way of life. It opens up possibilities like road trips, late night food runs, having a job/internship farther away from where you live, not needing public transportation, and seeing people who live farther away.

When you don't have a car for as long as I have gone without one, it changes your whole outlook on the world. I got an internship downtown that I can now travel to with no problem. I have a boyfriend who lives a thirty minute car ride away that I can go see whenever I want. And I can make the decision to go home whenever I get a little homesick. Having a car makes me appreciate the little things that it allows me to do. I also notice when the sun comes out more, which elevates my mood and helps me feel that spring is (hopefully) right around the corner.
